Mestre TC Silva, founder of Casa de Cultura Tainã, awarded Brazil's Internet Governance Prize for Rede Mocambos initiative
On May 29, 2025, the Internet Governance Awards ceremony will take place during the 15th Brazil Internet Forum (FIB), an initiative by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br).
The CGI.br is a multi-stakeholder entity responsible for strategic guidelines on internet use and development in Brazil.
The Brazil Internet Forum is the country's largest internet governance event and will be held this year in Salvador.
The award recognizes Rede Mocambos' work through the Baobab Route initiative, installing intermittently connected servers called "mucuas" across Brazilian territories. Established in 2006, the network connects over 300 communities in Brazil and abroad with more than 50 installed mucuas.
Network initiatives like data center installations have been implemented at Casa de Cultura Tainã in Campinas, São Paulo State University (Unesp), and Xavante indigenous land. These servers host the network's free communication tools, including Baobáxia - a multimedia repository serving as a digital memory archive for connected territories.
These actions demonstrate the concrete implementation of work discussing technological sovereignty and autonomy through connectivity and self-management.
The award ceremony will occur at 7 PM on May 29 in Room 1-Ground Floor at Fiesta Hotel da Bahia in Salvador. Registration is available on the FIB website.
The event will be streamed live by TV Tainã at tv.taina.net.br.
For international audiences, an English-translated stream will be available via Jitsi Meet platform, hosted on Tainã's data center.
